SAMSARA
Director: Jonathan Murphy & Mirona Mara
Ireland
11:11min
‘Samsara’ (the mind turned outwardly, lost in its projections) is a charcoal drawn, stop-motion animation, discussing the cyclical nature of life, death and rebirth. The story is played out in a dream-like world, full of symbolism and surreal imagery, laced with metaphor and mythology. Life is discussed as a series of actions and consequences in a never-ending loop. Images of things appear then disappear, grow then die, questioning the ideas of predestination and the illusion of free will. Each person is the centre of their own story, each creating their own reality by way of their choices in any given situation. You have the freedom of choice, but the inevitable outcome is the same, just each journey is different. The protagonist is both the beginning and the end, changing form before giving birth to themselves over and over again, inevitably being a part of both their own creation and destruction.

DEATH AND THE BUTCHER
