Philosophy

Revolution Media Lab’s educational philosophy is student-centered and anti-racist, celebrating the cultural wealth of each student and valuing the richness of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in media creation. RMML recognizes that each community has a unique perspective and intersectional experiences of each of its members. We strive to cultivate a space in which each student is empowered to be who they are by sharing and learning from one another’s experiences.

We prioritize student agency in the educational experience, centering lessons on guiding students in using the tools to empower storytelling and understanding media literacy.

RMML actively reimagines traditional media arts education by placing the students at the forefront of critically thoughtful, anti-racist lessons. Challenging dominant narratives by celebrating the voices of our students, RMML’s approach is to amplify diverse voices.

RMML promotes critical consciousness centering on media literacy, representation, and biases so students can be thoughtful and informed about the power of media. We encourage dialogic practices of respectful exchange of diverse viewpoints, which helps us learn to share our voices as we unlearn harmful practices and negative ideas of representation.

RMML lessons are socially just and teaching students to use media arts tools as a form of social justice action. Our initiatives in and out of the classroom address systemic inequalities. We encourage students to use their art as an expression of self and a medium to transform.

At RMML, we are a team. As a community-based organization, we practice collaborative co-creating, where students grow together, work on projects, and build relationships—both in and out of the classroom. reflecting on the communities in which we work. Teachers work alongside students as peers, learning from one another. Everyone has something to offer.

RMML integrates mindfulness techniques, encouraging self-reflection and emotional awareness, connecting to self, community and the media creation process. We integrate somatic practices promoting holistic well-being and self-expression in our creative endeavors. RMML also follows a trauma-informed perspective, cultivating a safe and nurturing environment for all participants.

The ethos of Revolution Me Media Lab is founded on anti-racist practices, LOVE, and JOY.  We imbue all of these tenants into activities to foster a positive atmosphere that fuels creativity,  growth, and community. as well as elevate media literacy, storytelling, and activism. By integrating these practices, RMML stands for equitable representation and social change.
